Artist Statement – Three Coins

This wall relief, Three Coins, explores the unseen threads of divine foreknowledge and providence woven into the fabric of everyday life. In ancient times, a merchant walks along the shore, unaware that his simple act of removing his cloak will set events into motion beyond his imagining. Three gold coins slip from his tunic, surrendered to the rhythm of the tide, seemingly lost to time. And yet, years later, Christ instructs Peter to retrieve a coin from the mouth of a fish—an act that reveals the Divine’s intricate awareness of even the smallest details.

Through this work, I reflect on the mystery of how divine presence moves through time, preparing for needs before they arise. The sea becomes a vessel of divine intent, carrying forward what seems lost to a moment of fulfillment. The walking figure, frozen mid-step, reminds us of our own unknowing participation in a larger, sacred design. Three Coins invites contemplation on the profound ways the Divine is at work in the unnoticed and the ordinary, shaping our lives with purpose long before we are aware.
