Artist Statement – Michael and Paul
Michael and Paul embodies the divine intervention and deliverance found in Acts 5:17-21, where Paul, imprisoned for his faith, is freed by the angel Michael, Christ’s messenger. This relief sculpture captures a pivotal moment—chains broken, captivity shattered—symbolizing not only Paul’s physical release but the deeper spiritual truth of freedom granted by God’s power.
The work speaks to an enduring narrative: the liberation from bondage, whether physical, spiritual, or unseen. Throughout history, God’s people have encountered forces seeking to confine them, yet divine mercy prevails. The interplay of light and shadow in this piece reflects the struggle between oppression and divine intervention, reminding us that the forces of darkness cannot withstand the presence of the Divine.
This work invites contemplation on the nature of freedom—the breaking of chains, the opening of doors, and the continual unfolding of God’s redemptive presence. Just as Paul was freed to continue his mission, so too are we called to embrace the freedom offered by faith, trusting in the unseen hands that break the bonds of our captivity.
